The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) continues to redefine the boundaries of digital trade in India, moving beyond standard e-commerce into specialized hyperlocal services and massive grassroots empowerment.
In a series of groundbreaking updates, the network has demonstrated its versatility by bringing India’s spiritual heritage online while simultaneously securing a ₹277 crore boost from the Ministry of MSME.
Bringing the Divine to Your Doorstep
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, ONDC has successfully integrated spiritual services into its open protocol. Devotees across India can now order Maha Kumbh Prasad directly through the network. Partnering with seller apps like Waayu, the network enables users to receive prasad from iconic temples, including the Bade Hanuman Ji Temple in Prayagraj and the Ayodhya Temple.
This move highlights ONDC’s unique ability to digitize traditional ecosystems that were previously inaccessible to the national market. To further assist pilgrims, ONDC also launched “Mahakumbh AI Sahayata,” a BharatGPT-powered AI companion designed to guide millions of devotees through their pilgrimage experience.
The ₹277 Crore MSME Push
On the industrial front, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) has officially launched the TEAM (MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing) Initiative. With a dedicated budget of ₹277.35 crore, the project aims to onboard 5 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises onto the ONDC network over the next three years.
Significantly, 50% of these new businesses will be women-led, underscoring ONDC’s commitment to social inclusivity. This initiative provides hand-holding support, digital cataloging assistance, and awareness workshops to ensure local artisans and small-town retailers can compete with e-commerce giants.
Mobility and Beyond: The Path to 50 Million Transactions
While food and grocery remain popular, ONDC’s mobility sector—which accounts for nearly 40% of total transactions—is expanding into multimodal transport. With major metros like Kochi and Chennai already integrated, CEO Thampy Koshy expects the network to reach 50 million monthly transactions by the end of the year.
From booking a metro ticket to ordering onions at government-subsidized rates through NCCF, ONDC is rapidly becoming the “everything network” for the Indian consumer.
